Before I had the opportunity to spend significant time in Abruzzo I read a book by an Irish writer, Harry Clifton, called On the Spine of Italy: A Year in the Abbruzzi. Although I cannot say that I encountered the same experiences as described in the book, it does give a detailed description of life in the smaller mountainous villages of Abruzzo.
The book seems to be set a few decades ago, although I believe it first hit the shelves either in 1999 or 2000.
