The 2009 Giro d’Italia has two stages in Abruzzo. (Here is the full list of stages.) Stage 17 (map, profile) on Wednesday 27th May is a short 79km run which will start in Chieti, then on to Pescara, Francavilla al Mare, before finishing on top of the steep Blockhaus ascent. The following day, Thursday 28th May, stage 18 (map, profile) starts in Sulmona, leaves the Abruzzo region, and finishes at Benevento in the Campania region, after a 181km cycle. The overall route of the race is available here. If you are in Abruzzo at the end of May you shouldn’t miss this.

Blockhaus – seems like a very german name, what is the derivation?
