Music of Abruzzo

What defines Abruzzo music? What is its style? What instruments are traditionally used?

In truth, I have no idea.  I have spent many enjoyable days and nights exploring Abruzzo but I have not been able to identify what is typical Abruzzese music.

Now that I think about it I’m a little surprised.  I like many styles of music.  On any given day I could be listening to rock, jazz, opera, indie, reggae and folk.   Yes, there are styles I’d only take in small doses, but I believe all forms of music should be given a chance.  I’ve often found that something I dismiss when I hear it on the radio, or on a recording, I can really enjoy when I hear it live.

In Abruzzo I have seen posters, flyers and newspaper announcements for various acts doing rock, jazz, classical, rap, and pop.  In fact, Abruzzo has many music festivals, from Jazz in Pescara to Indie in Roseti degli Abruzzi.  But I feel I can get these styles of music anywhere.  What I’m really looking for is something that is the essence of Abruzzo.

I’d be surprised if there isn’t a regional folk scene in Italy.  Food styles are regional, the Italian language is regional and cultural influences are also regional.  Considering this, and that there are plenty of  casual musicians who regularly gather to play in the local piazza, there must be a vibrant folk scene.  In the  summer months it’s not unusual to hear the sound of an accordion or a violin as you walk though the balmy town squares.

I’ve found two CDs online and I’m hoping that there is a folk expert out there that will tell me if these are good places to start.   They are:

The Italian Treasury – Abruzzo the-italian-treasury-abruzzo.jpg

and Balli Popollari in Abruzzo balli-popolari-in-abruzzo.jpg

I expect I’ll buy them anyway as they look interesting.  But, as I said earlier, if anyone has any suggestions please let me know.  Thanks in advance for your help.
