Discovering More Music From Abruzzo

I recently bought two contrasting CDs in Discover, Via L’Aquila, Pescara.

The first is Egocentrica by Simona Molinari. This CD has grown on me over the last month.

It can be hard to truly appreciate music sung in a foreign language but I really enjoy this album.   Here is clip of the track Nell’Aria from the CD.

The album has versions of Life Is Beautiful, Nel Blu Di Pinto Di Blu, La Vie En Rose and Que Sera Sera along with original music she either composed or co-composed.

Simona Molinari was born in Napoli but lives in L’Aquila (AQ), Abruzzo. If you’re in Milan on 5th December you can see her at the Blue Note.

I haven’t had a chance to see her in concert yet, but I plan on going the first chance I get.

This site gives you news, tour dates and samples of the rest of the tracks on the CD and here you can get more examples of her work.

The second CD is very different. Vola, Vola, Vola by the Associazione Corale Giuseppe Verdi gives you a chance to hear songs from Abruzzo being given the choral treatment.

The renditions are very polished and very different to what I’ve previously heard on CDs by Abruzzese folk groups.

The music is delivered in an operatic style that I really enjoy. I’m listening to Lu bbene che j te vuje as I type this post and it’s just beautiful.

Once again if I ever get a chance to go to one of their concerts I’d leap at it. Here is chance for you to hear their version of Mare Nostre.

When I bought these CDs I had no idea what I was going to get. I went into the shop and said that I wanted to buy a CD of traditional music from Abruzzo and a CD of modern music or jazz from an up-and-coming artist. I think Discover steered me well.

YouTube has plenty of clips of Simona Molinari and the Associazione Corale Giuseppe Verdi if you want to hear more.
