L.A. Confidential – Postcard from Loreto Aprutino

In the shadow of the Italian Gran Sasso, protected by the Majella and tempered by the breezes from the Adriatic, at 307 meters above sea levelin in the province of Pescara, Loreto Aprutino is a medieval village ancient origins.

Initially known only as Lauretum because of its proximity to a woodland of laurels trees (lauri), it later acquires the adjective Aprutium, scholarly form of Abruzzo, which completes the name of the town we know today.

The ancient community that inhabited these lands is demonstrated by numerous archaeological finds dating back to the sixth century BC when the “loretesi Italici” worshiped the goddess Feronia in order to invoke abundance and fertility of the land and were using ingenious “torculari” to press grapes and olives.

All’ombra del Gran Sasso d’Italia, protetto dalla Majella e mitigato dalle brezze dell’Adriatico, a 307 metri sul livello del mare sorge Loreto Aprutino, un borgo medievale nella provincia di Pescara di origini antichissime. Inizialmente noto solo come Lauretum per la sua vicinanza ad un bosco di allori (lauri), in seguito acquisice l’aggettivo Aprutium, forma dotta di Abruzzo, che ne completa il nome nella struttura oggi conosciuta. La comunità millenaria che abita queste terre è testimoniata dai numerosi reperti archeologici risalenti fino al VI secolo a.C. quando i “loretesi italici” adoravano la Dea Feronia per invocare abbondanza e fertilità della terra e adoperavano ingegnosi “torculari” per torchiare l’uva e le olive.
